Istituto Italiano di Cumbia

L’Istituto Italiano di Cumbia è il collettivo che raccoglie musicisti di cumbia contemporanea provenienti da alcuni gruppi italiani.
 Giulietta Passera da Torino, Claudia Vernier, Eleonora Cinti e Franiko Calavera da Roma, Kit Ramos e Stefano Iascone da Milano, FiloQ da Genova, Mr Paquiano da Lugano e Davide Toffolo da Pordenone.


Due producer, una tromba, un percussionista e cinque cantanti.

IIC nasce con la prima compilation di Cumbia prodotta in Italia e targata La Tempesta Sur, estensione del prestigioso collettivo La Tempesta dischi. Il racconto di una scena inedita alla ricerca della selva interiore di ognuno di noi. La scoperta e l’elaborazione della cumbia che, partita dalla Colombia, trapassa tutta l’America e trova ora una sua voce italiana. L’incarnazione sonora di un cambiamento antropologico in una scena musicale che unisce la musica popolare a suoni elettrici ed elettronici, domati dalla grattugia (Guiro) che caratterizza il ritmo cumbiero.

Un fermento internazionale e la sua invenzione italiana. Per questa mezcla puoi anche scomodare una parola piuttosto fuori moda oggi: futuro! Sì, la cumbia contemporanea, cumbiatron, cumbia digitale, cumbia elettronica, come la vuoi chiamare ha qualcosa a che fare con il futuro, quello della fantascienza per capirci, combinata con qualcosa di antichissimo, di ancestrale. La natura selvaggia che è dentro di noi.

Quella dell’Istituto Italiano di Cumbia puoi chiamarla anche spaghetti cumbia. Non spareranno!

No, non è salsa, non è patchanka, non è bossanova e tantomeno rumba. Si chiama cumbia!

El Istituto Italiano di Cumbia All Stars es el colectivo que agrupa músicos provenientes de entre las bandas de Cumbia contemporánea màs conocidas de Italia.

“Iluminará” es el título del single publicado este viernes 10 de marzo, en ocasión del primer tour sudamericano del grupo. La canción es una cover de “Choque de cometas” de La Nueva Luna, uno de los más grandes exponentes de la Cumbia argentina.

La elección no es casual, pues la gira llevará al IIC a tocar en diferentes ciudades de Argentina y Uruguay entre los días 14 y 23 de marzo.

The story of ‘Istituto Italiano di Cumbia’ begins in 2016 with Davide Toffolo’s desire to create an Italian “cumbiera scene” and with the subsequent search for artists linked to that colombian musical genre. This is how Davide meets the rest of the crew who participated in the first two compilations of “Cumbia italica”, called – in fact – “Istituto Italiano di Cumbia” Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

When in 2017 a summer music festival asked Davide to, somehow, bring on stage the sound of the two compilations, the idea of organizing a show based on the concept of the Jamaican sound systems appeared. With the singers from the different bands bringing their songs, backed by the “cumbia masters” who deal with the music and dubbing, along with the percussions.

This is how the “Istituto Italiano di Cumbia” was born, with the aim of mainly having a party on stage, willing to share with the audience this sense of “fiesta”.

Since that first concert in May 2017, the IIC has been able to move from the “cumbiero chaos” to the “controlled cumbiero chaos” of its shows, traveling the Italic peninsula with an audience that is becoming less unprepared and more enthusiastic about the “new sound” that this crew has brought.

With almost a hundred gigs in important festivals in our area (Rototom Sunsplash in Benicasim, Home Festival in Treviso, MiAmi Festival in Milan) and several venues all over Italy, the IIC All Stars – and consequently the bands that are in it – have been able to bring their fiesta to an even wider audience (at the Jova Beach Party 2019, with Jovanotti, there were 45,000 souls who danced cumbia with them).

Istituto Italiano di Cumbia All Stars pay now homage to the beloved genre with a cover album of important songs for the history of cumbia in the world. Songs that, even when not famous, bring along the flavor of tradition. An excellent method to test what has been learned as a “de facto band” in recent years, “studying” the most classic references: The world’s best cumbias.

The research, adaptation and reconstruction in a unique key of 11 songs that tell the historical path of Cumbia in the American continent – is now in the final phase of production. The IIC is already developing the visual aspect of the show, also working on a new setup that can better reflect the musical production of the album that the show should represent.

The project is called ONCE FLORES and, in a way, aims to outline a new step in the long journey that Cumbia has traveled through global transmigration for almost a century now. A small step that tells what Italians have learned about Cumbia from their South American friends. A step where Italians show the Cumbia they like, and how they like to play it.
