Mahout

I Mahout nascono a Pinerolo, piccola cittadina della provincia piemontese storicamente impregnata di sottocultura reggae che ha dato i natali alla più longeva band reggae in Italia, gli Africa Unite, e ad una delle esperienze più brevi e intense del punk nostrano anni ‘90, i Fichissimi. Cresciuti in un simile contesto i Mahout si formano con la precisa intenzione di fondere il reggae di stampo giamaicano con diverse altre influenze che spaziano dal punk californiano, al garage, al funk. Il risultato è un sound fresco e personale, difficile da ricondurre ad un genere specifico, che ondeggia continuamente fra morbidezza black e asprezza bianca.

Dopo un’intensa attività live a livello locale, la band pubblica l’EP Streetwise Demo. Il lavoro riscuote un inaspettato e sorprendente successo e porta i Mahout a intraprendere il loro primo tour su palchi importanti in tutta Italia supportando artisti del calibro di Lee Scratch Perry, Max Romeo, Alborosie, Luciano, Morgan Heritage, The Skints, The Bluebeaters, Sud Sound System, Busy Signal, Giuda e molti altri.

La band è ora pronta per la pubblicazione del primo album full-length My heart is a stoner (distribuito da Believe Italia).

L’album è prodotto da Marco Benz Gentile (già con Africa Unite, Dave Hillyard & the Rocksteady7, Meg, Architorti) che da anni è uno dei protagonisti della scena italiana ed internazionale come musicista e produttore e vanta la partecipazione di alcuni artisti internazionali come Larry McDonald (Gil Scott-Heron, Lee Scratch Perry, The Skatalites, Toots & the Maytals), la MC inglese Soom T che firma un featuring sul brano Pam Pam e Peter Truffa (New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, Giuliano Palma & The Bluebeaters).

Mahout formed in Pinerolo, a small town in northwest Italy historically impregnated with a strong reggae and punk vibe, which has been the birthplace of Italy’s first and most relevant reggae band Africa Unite, as well as of one of the most short-lived yet most intense italian punk experiences, Fichissimi. Growing up in such a context, Mahout teamed up with the precise intention of merging jamaican reggae with various other influences ranging from californian punk, to garage rock, to funk. The outcome is a fresh and personal sound, hard to be labelled as a specific genre, as it constantly sways between black softness and white harshness.

After having cut their teeth with a fair amount of local gigs, the band releases its first EP Streetwise Demo. The record meets an unexpected success and allows Mahout to go on their first tour playing big festivals throughout Italy, opening for artists the likes of Lee Scratch Perry, Max Romeo, Alborosie, Luciano, Morgan Heritage, The Skints, The Bluebeaters, Busy Signal, Giuda and many more.

Mahout are currently about to release their first full-length record, My heart is a stoner (distributed by Believe Italia).

The album is produced by Marco Benz Gentile (Africa Unite, Dave Hillyard & the Rocksteady7, Architorti, Fire), a longtime militant in the Italian and international musical scene – both as musician and producer – and features internationally renowned artists such as Larry McDonald (Gil Scott-Heron, Lee Scratch Perry, The Skatalites, Toots & the Maytals), British MC Soom T, who is featured on Pam Pam, Peter Truffa (New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, Giuliano Palma & The Bluebeaters).
