Mellow Mood

I Mellow Mood nascono a Pordenone nel 2005. Capitanata dai gemelli Jacob e LO Garzia, la reggae band inizia presto una partnership con il produttore Paolo Baldini, che diventerà in seguito loro dubmaster ed architetto sonoro. Il debutto ufficiale avviene nel 2009 quando, senza etichetta, distributore o ufficio stampa, i Mellow Mood pubblicano “Move!”, un album dalle sonorità roots che intendeva essere un primo affacciarsi sul panorama italiano ma che ha riscosso un inaspettato successo internazionale. Grazie alla loro intensissima attività live, il Rototom Sunsplash li nomina miglior reggae band italiana e terza a livello europeo nello stesso anno, mentre i due singoli “Only You” e “Dance Inna Babylon” ad oggi hanno totalizzato più di cinquanta milioni di visualizzazioni su YouTube.

I Mellow Mood tornano quindi in studio con Baldini nel 2012 per registrare “Well Well Well”, ed entrano a far parte della scuderia de La Tempesta Dischi, importante etichetta indipendente italiana. Spaziando tra new-roots, rocksteady e clubbing tribale, i Mellow Mood dimostrano con questo album di poter essere tra i protagonisti di una nuova generazione di artisti reggae veramente internazionale. Il tour europeo che segue li porta ad esibirsi in 12 paesi, calcando i palchi di festival importanti come Rototom Sunsplash e Sziget Festival.

Nel 2013 l’uscita dei due singoli “Dig Dig Dig” e “Extra Love” (quest’ultimo con il featuring della reggae star Tanya Stephens) anticipa l’uscita di nuovo materiale. La band si spoglia definitivamente della sezione fiati e torna ad una line-up più essenziale unendo la riscoperta del roots ai suoni più moderni di derivazione giamaicana. Nel 2014 i Mellow Mood pubblicano “Twinz”, un album denso di collaborazioni europee (la superstar portoghese Richie Campbell, l’emergente spagnolo Sr. Wilson e gli italiani Forelock e KG Man).

Meno di un anno dopo, “Twinz” rivela il proprio gemello: “2 The World” testimonia l’ulteriore evoluzione del gruppo friulano e vede la partecipazione di numerosi artisti giamaicani (Tanya Stephens, Jah9, Hempress Sativa, The Gideon & Selah). A fine 2015 i Mellow Mood celebrano con un mini-festival itinerante ricco di ospiti internazionali la nascita della loro sub-etichetta La Tempesta Dub, della quale curano la direzione artistica assieme a Paolo Baldini. Dopo aver contribuito alla realizzazione del documentario dello stesso Baldini “DubFiles at Song Embassy, Papine, Kingston 6”, i Mellow Mood nel 2016 riprendono il tour e partecipano ad alcuni dei festival più importanti di Europa e Americhe, come il Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (USA), Jamming Festival (Colombia), Siempre Vivo Reggae Festival (Cile), Reggae Sun Ska (Francia) e Rototom Sunsplash (Spagna).

In seguito ad una pausa durata diversi mesi, i Mellow Mood annunciano l’uscita ad aprile 2018 di un nuovo disco, dal titolo “Large”. In un momento storico in cui la “tropical house” scala le classifiche di tutto il mondo, i Mellow Mood decidono invece di incidere un disco dalla forte impronta roots, concentrandosi su una scrittura più onesta e sincera e ritmiche granitiche. La scrittura dell’album avviene nell’estate del 2017 ed è caratterizzata da un approccio più “live”, dal momento che la band arrangia gran parte dei brani direttamente in sala prove e li registra “in diretta” nello studio di Baldini. L’utilizzo di parecchia strumentazione vintage anni ’80 dà una marcata impronta sonora a tutto il disco, masterizzato dal celebre Chris Athens (Drake, Nas & Damian Marley, DJ Khaled). La realizzazione dell’artwork invece è stata affidata al giovane collagista americano Dewey Saunders, che ha precedentemente lavorato con Chronixx e Anderson .Paak. Il tema principale dell’album è una critica alla scellerata economia di mercato dei giorni nostri, che spinge anche attraverso l’arte a consumare di più, produrre di più e vivere “alla grande” invece di nutrire solide relazioni personali, prendersi cura gli uni degli altri e apprezzare quanto già possediamo. Sebbene le loro liriche non siano di ispirazione marcatamente Rastafariana, la musica dei Mellow Mood è costantemente consapevole e positiva: “Call Back The Love”, “Tuff Rocky Road” ed “Another Day” sono un richiamo ad aprire il proprio cuore ed abbracciare un modus vivendi positivo nonostante le inevitabili ed innumerevoli difficoltà del vivere quotidiano. E mentre non ci deve essere spazio per disinformazione, fake news e una politica internazionale dissennata (“Sound Of A War”, “It Can’t Work”), sono ben accetti i consigli di chi ci sta più vicino (“Daddy”). Con “String Up A Sound” i Mellow Mood fanno un tuffo nel panorama musicale afro-beat, campionando un brano tratto dal repertorio dei Sierra Leone’s Refugees All Stars per tessere le lodi del potere della musica come medicina universale. Che si tratti di una padrona di casa che detesta la musica reggae e la sua “livity” (“Ms. Mary”), di una dolorosa separazione (“Heart To No One”) o della tentazione della facile autocommiserazione (“Eye Waata”), i Mellow Mood ci ricordano sempre che la musica e la consapevolezza spirituale sono gli strumenti più efficaci a nostra disposizione per superare i momenti difficili e continuare a camminare sulla retta via (“Place Called Home”).

Il 30 novembre 2018 esce “Large Dub”. Per questo disco, che come già si evince dal titolo raccoglie le dub version del precedente lavoro della band friulana. Paolo Baldini smette quindi le vesti di produttore e si pone ai controlli del mixer in qualità di dubmaster, firmando 12 tracce dal sapore autentico. Non è esagerato parlare di autenticità proprio perché – in continuità filologica con la produzione originale, già caratterizzata da una marcata impronta “live & direct” – Large Dub è stato realizzato con lo stesso spirito con cui i padri fondatori di questa tecnica musicale creavano le proprie dub version: le tracce scorrono separate sui canali del mixer e vengono orchestrate durante un’unica take dall’inizio alla fine in modo puramente analogico, senza ricorrere a sovraincisioni o programmazione al computer. Questa operazione, che trasforma la tecnica in arte, è stata filmata in multicamera e montata per realizzare un vero e proprio documentario sul making-of del disco, interamente disponibile sul canale YouTube dei Mellow Mood.

A fine 2019 la band pubblica la ballad “One Night”, seguita ad inizio 2020 dalla versione spagnola “Una Noche”. A maggio, i Mellow Mood partecipano ad una compilation prodotta da Collie Buddz e Johnny Cosmic con il brano “Unstoppable”, edita dall’etichetta statunitense Ineffable Records. Viene avviata quindi una collaborazione con Ineffable Records che porta a fine 2020 all’uscita del singolo “Mr. Global”, che vede la partecipazione dell’artista giamaicano Kabaka Pyramid. Il nuovo singolo dei Mellow Mood “Laser Sight” esce il 26 febbraio 2021 per La Tempesta Dub/Ineffable Records.

Italian reggae band Mellow Mood formed in Pordenone (North-East Italy) in 2005 while most of the members were attending high school together. Led by twins Jacopo and Lorenzo Garzia, the band soon started their partnership with producer Paolo Baldini, who was later to become their sound architect and dubmaster, and officially debuted in 2009 with “Move!”. The album was released without a label, distributor or PR agent, intending to be a first “move” on the Italian reggae scene, but gaining international recognition nonetheless. Thanks to their heartfelt live shows, Rototom Sunsplash named Mellow Mood the best Italian reggae band, and ranked them third at European level in the same year. The two singles “Only You” and “Dance Inna Babylon” now have more than fifty million views on YouTube.

Mellow Mood went back into the studio with Baldini to record “Well Well Well” and were signed by Italy’s most important independent label, La Tempesta, in 2012. Sailing through new-roots, rocksteady and tribal clubbing, Mellow Mood proved to be among the protagonists of a new generation of reggae artists hailing from all over the planet. A European tour followed and led the band to playing in 12 countries, and performing at important festivals like Rototom Sunsplash and Sziget Festival.

In 2013 the two singles “Dig Dig Dig” and “Extra Love” (the latter featuring dancehall legend Tanya Stephens) revealed that the band was ready to move forward and release new music. Going back to a more essential band line-up (without a horns section from now on), Mellow Mood coupled the rediscovery of roots music with a deeper knowledge of the most recent Jamaican sounds and released “Twinz” in 2014. The album was enriched by a number European collaborations (Portuguese Richie Campbell, Spanish Sr. Wilson and Italians Forelock and KG Man). In the same year the French powerhouse Dub Inc chose them as the opening act for a number of shows during their “Paradise (Diversité)” tour, including the renowned L’Olympia in Paris, further introducing the band to the French public.

Less than 10 months later, “Twinz” revealed its twin: “2 The World” bore witness to the band’s evolution and featured several Jamaican artists like Tanya Stephens, Jah9, Hempress Sativa, The Gideon & Selah. In late 2015 Mellow Mood also celebrated the birth of their own sub-label La Tempesta Dub (to release the band’s future works) with a touring mini-festival hosting international guests. After having assisted their producer Paolo Baldini in the making of “DubFiles at Song Embassy, Papine, Kingston 6” – a documentary about the hidden music talents of a Jamaican ghetto – the partnership with French reggae stars Dub Inc continued, as Mellow Mood were featured in Dub Inc’s record “So What”. Mellow Mood also joined forces with emerging reggae act Jahneration for yet another French tour and kept busy touring Europe and America intensively in 2016 and 2017, performing at many of the most important reggae festivals of both continents like Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (USA), Jamming Festival (Colombia), Siempre Vivo Reggae Festival (Chile), Eurockéennes de Belfort and Reggae Sun Ska (France), ViñaRock and Rototom Sunsplash (Spain).

After a short hiatus, the band announced that they would release new material in 2018. Entitled “Large”, the new record dropped in April 2018. At a time in which “tropical house” is climbing up pop charts worldwide, Mellow Mood decided to record a straightforward roots reggae album focusing on honest, heartfelt song-writing and heavyweight rhythms. The writing of the songs took place during the summer of 2017 and was characterized by a more “live” approach as it was mostly arranged by the band in their rehearsal room and recorded live in Baldini’s studio. The use of vintage instruments dating back to the ‘80s sets the sounds of the
album, which was mastered in Austin, TX by the renowned Chris Athens (Drake, Nas & Damian Marley, DJ Khaled). L.A.-based collage artist
Dewey Saunders (who previously worked with Chronixx and Anderson .Paak) provided the artwork for the album. The main theme of the record
is a criticism of today’s market economy, which is constantly pushing us
to produce more, consume more and live “large” rather than nurturing human relations, taking care of each other and appreciating what we already have. Although Mellow Mood don’t sing strictly Rastafarian lyrics, their music is consistently conscious and positive. Music and spiritual awareness remain the “greatest weapons” to overcome tough times and keep walking on the right path.

At the end of 2018 Mellow Mood and Paolo Baldini jointly released “Large Dub”. The record, as the title itself reveals, is a collection of dub versions from the Italian reggae band’s latest album, “Large”. Paolo Baldini takes off his producer’s hat and sits behind the mixing desk like a real dubmaster delivering 12 authentic-sounding dub versions. The word “authentic” does not lack context here, since – just like the original production, which was characterized by a “live & direct” approach – Large Dub was made following the spirit of the founding fathers of this musical technique when they recorded their dub versions: tracks run separately through the desk’s channels and are orchestrated during one take only, from start to finish, in a purely analog way, with no overdubs or additional computer programming. Such operation, which transforms technique into art, was filmed and edited in order to create a proper documentary on the making of the album, which is entirely available on Mellow Mood’s YouTube channel.

At the end of 2019 Mellow Mood released the love ballad “One Night”, and its Spanish version “Una Noche” on 13th March 2020. In May 2020, Mellow Mood took part in the riddim compilation “Cali Roots Riddim” with their single “Unstoppable”. The compilation is produced by Collie Buddz and Johhny Cosmic and released via United States based label Ineffable Records. The collaboration with the label continued with the release of “Mr. Global”, featuring Jamaican artist Kabaka Pyramid. Mellow Mood’s new single “Laser Sight” will be released on 26^th February 2021 via La Tempesta Dub/Ineffable Records.
